Josh Wardle, a Welsh software engineer, is the creator of the online word game Wordle. Players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word, and each time they do, they receive feedback in the shape of colored tiles that show when the letters match or are in the correct position. Every player tries to guess the same word in Wordle’s single daily solution. Wordle was played 4.8 billion times in 2023.

It’s really annoying that I lost my Wordle streak without losing or missing a game. Also, even if you’re already somewhat proficient at Wordle, having a strong starting word can help you improve your score from 4/6 to 3/6 (and potentially even 2/6).
Best Wordle Starting Words: Most common letters
You don’t need to be a genius to figure out that using letters that appear more frequently in English is a smart idea. For instance, the word is more likely to have a “A” than a “Z.”
In a study on English Letter Frequency Counts, Google research director Peter Norvig compiled a list of the most frequently used letters in the English language by examining data from Google Books. According to his research, the most common words were “E,” “T,” and “A,” while the least common ones were “J,” “Q,” and “Z.”
To truly determine which letters appear most frequently in the game, you would need to examine every word on that list, which is based on words in general rather just Wordle answers.
Thankfully, it’s simple to accomplish that. Wordle’s answers are publicly available in the HTML code of the website, so downloading them and doing some math is rather easy. When you do that, you obtain the following list of the most commonly used letters:
- E
- A
- R
- O
- T
- L
- I
- S
- N
- C
It should be noted that the list above is based on accurate Wordle answers rather than Wordle words; only 2,309 of the 15,000+ words that the game accepts as guesses are legitimate solutions.
That’s fascinating, but it’s only a taste of the greatest Wordle start word main dish that comes next.
What are the best Wordle start words?
To find the best Wordle start words, a number of people have tried using math.
Programmer and game designer Tyler Glaiel was one of them. He gave each letter in Wordle’s 12,972 potential guesses a score of 0, 1, or 2, depending on whether or not it appears in one of the 2,309 answers and if it is in the right place.
The system evaluated all 12,972 words and found that the following are the best places to start:
- SOARE
- ROATE
- RAISE
Glaiel comes to the conclusion that ROATE is the ideal Wordle start word if you want to swiftly rule out potential answers for reasons too complicated to discuss here.
However, you will never receive a 1/6 with ROATE since it is not included in Wordle’s list of potential answers. Glaiel advises beginning with RAISE as a result.
Bertrand Fan, a programmer, adopted a similar strategy and, predictably, produced a very similar list:
- SOARE
- SAREE
- SEARE
- STARE
- ROATE
According to Fan’s study, STARE is the statistically best Wordle start word because the top three don’t appear in Wordle’s list of potential answers.
We would use the word “Stare,”. Since S is the most frequently used first letter, A is the most frequently used third letter, and E is the most frequently used fifth letter in Wordle answers, the selection was instead made on the basis of common sense. In contrast, the two most common consonants in the game are T and R.
Thus, STARE is the ideal Wordle start word. However, SALET (a light medieval helmet) is the choice of two MIT researchers. That also gives you five of the top ten letters, but since R is the third most used letter and L is the sixth, we don’t care as much about it as we do about STARE. Definitely a good alternative.
Oh, Wait, Actually The Best Wordle Starting Words Is Not “crane”
The best Wordle start word according to WordleBot
Given that it was created by the people who currently operate Wordle, the NYT’s excellent WordleBot tool should be aware of its own list of the top Wordle start words.
The original estimate was based on the average number of steps required to solve Wordle, the average number of solutions remaining after playing it, and a few other metrics.
The WordleBot was updated in August 2022, though, and now “it assigns roughly 3,150 relatively common English words a probability of being a Wordle solution, based on what it has observed about the words that have been solutions so far,” according to the New York Times. It no longer knows the original solutions.
Based in part on word frequency in New York Times archives going back to 2000 and on what the bot has noticed about the words that have been solutions thus far, we then give a chances of being a solution to each of the approximately 3,150 words.
WordleBot currently considers SLATE as the ideal beginning word as a result of those changes, with LEAST coming in second best option (when playing in Hard mode).
The best starting word a while back was CRANE, which illustrates how the metrics have altered according to the words that have been used. The Times says DEALT is another great starting word.
The following are a few of WordleBot’s preferred starting words:
- SLATE
- TRACE
- CARTE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- CRANE
- LEAST
- CARET
- STALE
Should your Wordle start word have lots of vowels?
Some swear by using words that allow you to utilize three or four vowels at the very start, such as ADIEU, AUDIO, ABOUT, CANOE, or OUIJA.
Since (almost) every Wordle answer contains at least one vowel, it makes sense to identify it as quickly as possible, therefore this might be a viable alternate strategy. Personally, though, I wouldn’t choose that path. You will never receive a 1/6 with ADIEU since it is not a Wordle answer. Although the audio is good, it lacks an E, which is the most common letter in the game as well as the most common vowel. Likewise with ABOUT.
Although CANOE isn’t horrible, you lose what you gain in one area because C and N aren’t quite as prevalent as S, T, or R when it comes to consonants. Also, OUIJA is merely a dumb suggestion because it has a J, the second least probable letter to appear in the game at all, but no E.
Vowels, however, are crucial to the game overall, so give them careful thought while coming up with a second word.
What about the best follow-up word? | Best Wordle second words
Of course, occasionally you won’t get any yellow or green results even with a superb start word. You’ll need a strong second word if that occurs.
Since you don’t want to use the same letters again, your choice will clearly rely on what your first word was. However, I would suggest PHONY, COULD, or DOING as solid second options if I presume you’re doing what I say and using STARE as your Wordle start word.
Given that Y is one of the most common fifth letters, PHONY is a statistically superior choice for a second word. However, as previously said, playing your vowels early is always a smart strategy, because both COULD and DOING use two vowels.
Tips and Tricks from Wordlers
Always begin with the same word
Starting with the same word each time can offer you a basic approach for every game, even though it doesn’t ensure success. You may eventually choose the correct word on your first attempt. You may utilize the data from Redditors, TikTokers, and YouTubers as a resource because they have done statistical analysis on letter frequency.
Each time, begin with a different word
Try something different in every game. This is the author John Green’s approach. In an email, Mr. Green stated, “I start each Wordle puzzle with a word I have never used before.” “I like this approach, even though I know it’s not the best or even a good one,” he said. “The stress of the fifth and sixth guesses is nearly undesirable, so I usually get it in four, which is ideal for me.”
Choose a word with a lot of vowels to begin
Starting with a term that has several vowels has shown to be effective for certain Wordle players. For example, the words “adieu,” “audio,” and “canoe” would be suitable starting words since at least three of the five letters are vowels.
For the first two lines, choose two words that are completely distinct
Because a part of Wordle is about the process of elimination, you might be able to succeed by following your first guess with a word that has completely different letters.
For five-letter words, use a database
Some could refer to this as cheating, while others might describe it as a small amount of help. You may utilize a database such as Best word List to assist you brainstorm if you’re at a loss for a good five-letter word.
Keep an eye out for letters that appear more than once
The mere fact that your green tile showed up in one location does not guarantee that it will show up in another. “I recall a great deal of frustration on Twitter when the word ‘knoll’ was used,” Seattle resident Dan Sanderson said. Even though the words are somewhat common, it’s one of the rare examples of varietal difficulty that we see in Wordle’s word selections. Since a repeated letter hides information from you, it does reduce the effectiveness of your guesses.
Get a pen and paper and do it the old-fashioned way
Or return to the core. Paola Tamma, a 29-year-old Brussels-based writer, stated, “If I feel stuck, instead of looking at the interface, I just take a piece of paper and write out the word with the blank spots, which are the letters that I still need to guess.” Try stepping back and inserting a filler letter, like “X,” in the blank tile rather than using letters that you know are grayed out. You can never predict what word will come to mind.
Make use of your guess statistics to guide your strategy
After completing a game, review your statistics and use the data to enhance your Wordle strategy. The amount of games you have played, your win %, your current streak, and your greatest streak will all be displayed on your statistics board. Pay attention to the distribution of guesses. Start tomorrow’s Wordle with a different word if you’re starting with the same word every time and it’s not working. In addition, practice makes perfect.
For an added difficulty, try “hard mode”
A rule is added in Wordle’s hard mode to make the game a little more challenging. Players must use the yellow or green letters they have identified in a word in their following guesses. According to Mr. Sanderson, “that actually restricts your ability to search for more information.” This greatly reduces the number of words in the game, but it can also help you answer it in less guesses.
Mr. Sanderson went on to say that while hard mode is more difficult, it makes you look at the keyboard for longer periods of time and prevents you from going back to letters you’ve previously used. In addition, your hard mode score is marked with an asterisk to indicate that you attempted the extra twist when you share your wins.
Share your scores in a group text or on social media to show your right to speak
Sharing your score on social media, in group texts with pals, or anyplace else you wish to boast is perfectly acceptable once you’ve discovered the word of the day. After your game is over, click “Share,” then copy and paste your yellow and green squares onto whatever platform you like. Your Wordle guesses from that day are expressed by the squares that show up.
What are the Wordle rules?
Although Wordle’s rules are quite simple, there are a few unexpected twists included just for good measure.
- Letters that are correctly positioned and in the answer glow green.
- Letters that appear in the answer but are positioned incorrectly turn yellow.
- Letters that are not in the answer become gray.
- There is never a plural answer.
- You may see letters more than once. So, if your guess has two of the same letter, they may both turn green, both change yellow, or one might be green and the other yellow.
- Every guess needs to be a word that exists in Wordle’s dictionary. For example, ABCDE is impossible to guess.
- Unless you are playing on Hard mode, you are not required to use the correct letters in your subsequent guesses.
- To solve the Wordle, you have six guesses.
- The daily Wordle must be finished by midnight in your time zone.
- Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions is the source of all answers. But…
- Wordle will take around 10,000 words as guesses, which is a larger pool. You can guess a plural like WORDS, for example. Wordle will accept that as a guess, but it is probably incorrect.
How to play NYT Wordle?
Once you’ve learned the strategies and tips, Wordle is a simple game to play and win. Let’s begin by going over the fundamentals of Wordle.
- To start, just type in any five-letter word and see what happens. Wordle’s goal is to identify the right five-letter word.
- The individual letters will be color-coded once you have entered your first word. Gray indicates that the letter is not in the five-letter word, yellow indicates that the letter is correct but the position is incorrect, and green indicates that the letter and its location are accurate.
- Keep making five-letter word guesses and base your choices on the colors. But take caution—you can only guess the right five-letter word six times!
- Congratulations! You’ve won if you correctly guess the word. After your sixth guess, the correct five-letter word will be listed to you if you didn’t guess properly.
The most challenging aspect of Wordle is mastering five-letter words, which is something we might all occasionally find difficult. You will then have to come up with precise letters within specified five-letter words in order to win Wordle. Does that seem difficult? You’ll need a Wordle word finder, then. You may use the powerful search featools tures of Word Tips Wordle solver to locate any five-letter word that has the particular characters you want. In addition, you can exclude letters. This tool will be very helpful to you if you want to win Wordle.
how to win at Wordle?
Using one of the greatest Wordle start words is the best advice I can provide. It makes a huge impact, and I can’t emphasize this enough.
If you don’t have one, you’ll be struggling in the dark to discover the correct five letters—or perhaps fewer—among the 26 possible. The best beginning words, however, have been determined by smart people using both English and Wordle answer frequency. So make advantage of them!
Second, consider combinations, particularly at the beginning and at the end. For example, SH, ST, CR, and CH are all often included, although some possibilities are far more common than others.
It goes without saying that vowels must also be taken into account. While not all Wordle answers will have more than one, many do, and some even have three. If they don’t appear, you might want to try a couple more on your next attempt. A good Wordle start word should have employed a couple. In addition, keep in mind the Y, which is easy to forget at times serves as a substitute vowel. It comes at the end of a lot of words as well.
Lastly, explore possibilities. You can attempt various answers to see how they appear on the screen as long as you don’t hit “Enter.” Enter the most likely letters as well as any that you are certain are part of the word, then mentally switch between the other options. This technique works well and is helpful when the word in question is not an obvious one (like FJORD or ISLET).
We also have a ton of Wordle hints and techniques to give, such as how we’ve examined each Wordle answer to find patterns and offer some further guidance there.

Find out more about Wordle
To continue your winning run, you must figure out the secret five-letter word is hidden inside each of the six rows of five boxes that Wordle provides you each day.
A powerful word like ARISE, or any other word with a solid balance of many vowels and common consonants, should be your first choice. Since you’re losing the opportunity to maybe remove or confirm an extra letter, you should stay away from starting words with repeating letters. You can check the ones you got right or wrong after pressing Enter. A box that turns ⬛️ indicates that the letter isn’t in the secret word at all. The letter is in the word, but not in that position, as shown by 🟨. 🟩 indicates that you have the right letter in the right spot.
In addition to attempting to avoid any letters you now know aren’t in today’s answer, your second guess should complement the first word by using another “good” word to cover any common letters you missed the first time. If you’re lucky, you’ll have some colored squares to work with that will put you on the correct track.
After that, all you have to do is use what you’ve learned to help you focus your guesses on the correct word. You have a total of six attempts, and you are only allowed to use real words—you cannot check for an E by filling in the boxes with EEEEE. Remember that letters might also repeat (e.g., BOOKS).
