In general, if a Paladin acts badly for someone of their type, the divine blessing from which they draw power will be withdrawn. There are various complexities to each Paladin Oath that go beyond merely being a roleplay gimmick, and some crimes may be less punishable under one oath than another depending on their distinct Tenets.
For example, people who have taken the Oath of Devotion must maintain a strong feeling of courage, compassion, and obligation. These are the Paladins who assist the helpless, uphold ethical laws, and go bravely into combat. If a Devotion Paladin murders an innocent person, regardless of the motive, they will be considered Oathbreakers.
Paladins who take the Oath of the Ancients, on the other hand, swear to be champions of compassion and charity. Any act of malice, such as murdering the Owlbear cub in the cave or causing Arabella to be slain in the Emerald Grove, turns the Ancients‘ Oath ineffective.
The Oath of Vengeance allows the most flexibility of the three Paladin subclasses. They are sworn to punish the cruel and evil and to render just judgment to the guilty. Saving Auntie Ethel’s life or releasing the goblin Sazza violates the oath.
If the player breaks an oath, the Oathbreaker Knight will give them a visit. Talk to him back at camp to officially become an Oathbreaker.

What is an Oathbreaker’s Role?
Oathbreakers lose access to their holy spells while gaining access to unholy ones. Instead of playing a hybrid support and frontline fighter role, these Paladins place a greater emphasis on causing damage, performing offensive magic, and commanding the dead rather than killing them. Players will continue to have access to Divine Smite.
In terms of playstyle, Oathbreakers are similar to Warlocks in that they use melee attacks combined with Necrotic spells to harm or debilitate enemies. Some significant spells are:
- Spiteful Suffering – Targets take Necrotic damage, and attacks against it have an Advantage
- Control Undead – Gain control over any lower–level undead
- Hellish Rebuke – React to an attack and deal Fire damage to the attacker
- Animate Dead – Create an undead minion from a nearby corpse
- Aura of Hate – Passively increases the melee damage of the Paladin and their allies based on the caster’s Charisma modifier
