Baldur’s Gate 3 Companions Tier List Ranking
The following is a ranking of the Baldur’s Gate 3 Companions Tier List from best to worst:
- A-Tier: Astarion, Gale, Karlach
- B-Tier: Halsin, Wyll
- C-Tier: Jaheira, Minsc
- S-Tier: Lae’zel, Shadowheart, Minthara
Who Is The Best Companion in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Lae’zel, Minthara, and Shadowheart are the finest companions in Baldur’s Gate 3. Lae’zel’s strong racial bonuses and Githyanki dialogue-specific story elements are what set her apart. The Githyanki is one of the strongest in BG3, and while companions may be rerolled or respec, races cannot. Minthara has a strong Paladin build and a compelling Dark Urge character backstory. Last but not least, the fan favorite Shadowheart has a compelling story and special gear sets that may be unlocked by progressing her story.
Companion Name | Companion Ranking |
---|---|
Lae’zel | S+ |
Minthara | S |
Shadowheart | S- |
Astarion | A+ |
Gale | A |
Karlach | A- |
Wyll | B+ |
Halsin | B+ |
Minsc | C+ |
Jaheira | C |
In rankings, someone must be at the top and someone at the bottom, therefore keep in mind that this is the tier list. You are free to pick anyone you would like to travel with, though, as there may not be much of a difference between these companions. You may always use Withers in your camp to switch your current companion’s class and subclass if you’re not happy with them. Many of the builds we suggest for the companions are predicated on the idea that they have been valued and are being used to their maximum capacity. Let’s now examine each companion in more detail.
Jaheira (C Tier)
Best Jaheira Features in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Race: High Half-Elf
- Class: Druid
- Background: Soldier
- Romance: Yes
- Origin Character: No
- Base Proficiencies: Unknown
- Location: Last Light Inn, the Shadowcursed Lands inside Act 2
- Best Build: Spellcasting, Circle of the Moon Druid
- Initiative: +2
- Base Abilities: Strenght: 15, Constitution: 17, Charisma: 15, Dexterity: 14, Intelligence: 10, Wisdom: 16
- Darkvision Range: 12m
- Movement Speed: 9m
Act 2 is when Jaheira, a Half High Elf Companion, becomes available to join your party Located in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, she protects the Last Light Inn and is crucial to solving the ultimate cult’s secrets. Jaheira, a High Harper of Baldur’s Gate with a solid military experience, demonstrates her Druid abilities during her first appearance, emphasizing her great constitution and skill in dual-wielding swords.
Her ability ratings, like those of every other companion in Baldur’s Gate 3, are respectable, although they may be more evenly distributed upon a reset. Jaheira focuses on using Wild Shape to transform into different animals during battle, and the Circle of the Moon is her greatest subclass. With the ability to provide assistance and minimal healing, the optimal build is mostly made to excel at handling damage. Jaheira transforms into an enormous threat by utilizing Wild Shapes, which provide significant damage output, efficient crowd control, and remarkable survivability.
As a Circle of the Moon Druid, Jehaira can be constructed similarly to Halsin in order to gain strength. Her race, though, is not as strong as his. She moves more slowly and with less initiative. Additionally, she is created with an emphasis on strength and dual-wielding swords when players first encounter her, making her a somewhat unusual combo for the druid class.
Also, she appears relatively late in the game. Near the end of Act 2, you can include her in your active party. This implies that players could not even be aware of her presence for the most of the game. All of these elements work together to explain why she came in last on our ranking.
Minsc (C+ Tier)
Best Minsc Features in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Race: Human
- Class: Ranger
- Origin Character: No
- Background: Folk Hero
- Location: Counting House, Vault in Act 3
- Romance: No
- Best Build: Ranged Combat, Gloom Stalker Ranger
- Movement Speed: 9m
- Base Abilities: Strenght: 12, Constitution: 13, Wisdom: 15, Dexterity: 17, Intelligence: 8, Charisma: 10
- Initiative: +3
Since Minsc is the final companion you may add, many players don’t get the opportunity to get to know him well because they can only encounter him in Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate City. The first the name you’ll hear is the Stonelord, which is another term for him. You must finish the Aid the Underduke mission in order to recruit him. Together with his devoted companion, the hamster Boo, Minsc is a really special and endearing creature. He is a recurring character from Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2.
Gloom Stalker is Minsc’s Best Ranger subclass. It focuses on darkness, stealth, and ambushing enemies. The Gloom Stalker thrives in low-light or dark conditions, developing a variety of abilities that enable them to launch surprise attacks and remain undetected. It is one of the greatest classes in Baldur’s Gate 3 and the best range class overall, with exceptionally high damage and unique arrows and consumables.
Minsc would rank far higher if this were the list of best-class tiers. His race isn’t the worst, but it’s also not the best for rangers. However, many players are unable to appreciate his unique personality because of how late you even recruit him. However, he is a compelling character who is well worth the wait, offering a variety of original dialogue options, particularly when combined with Jaheira. The two have a shared past and are excellent exploration companions.
Halsin (B+ Tier)
Best Halsin Features in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Race: Wood Elf
- Class: Druid
- Origin Character: No
- Background: Outlander
- Best Build: Spellcasting, Circle of the Moon Druid
- Romance: Yes
- Location: Act 1, Recruitable Last Light Inn inside Act 2, Shadow-Cursed Lands inside Act 2, Shattered Sanctum
- Base Proficiencies: No Information
- Initiative: +3
- Darkvision Range: 12m
- Base Abilities: Strenght: 16, Intelligence: 12, Charisma: 16, Constitution: 16, Dexterity: 16, Wisdom: 18
- Movement Speed: 10,5m
As the First Druid of the Druids of the Emerald Grove, a tiny settlement also known as the Druid Grove, Halsin, a Wood Elf Druid, gladly assumes this position. Halsin shows the perfect harmony between extreme kindness and decisiveness. He moves through the world calmly, having a great deal of experience and a deep awareness of nature and its inhabitants. His observations, however, demonstrate a deep resonance with the intricate rhythms of life.
He will be trapped in a broken sanctum in the bear form, and players can initially confront him in the center of the goblin camp. But it takes a lot longer to recruit him, and players can accomplish it later in Act 2.
Adopting Wild Shape is the ideal build for Halsin’s companion, who will mostly act as a damage dealer. Although he can heal to some extent and has access to a few decent supporting abilities, he is best suited to focus on different animal transformations that provide him with special abilities, bonuses, and strong survivability.
Halsin has mastered the technique of Wild Shape, which allows him to change into a variety of animals, and he is skilled at using strong spells and the forces of nature. He can transform into a wolf, bear, spider, and more because to this talent; each shape gives him unique tactical benefits. Druids are great assets to any group because of their proficiency in summoning, crowd control, and support. But his spellcasting ability is severely limited in the Wild Shape form. Additionally, Halsin doesn’t provide anything interesting to the squad because Gale deals damage and Shadowheart is superior at healing; as a result, he is classified as the B tier.
Baldur’s Gate 3: All Baldur’s Gate Companions Build You Need
Wyll (B+ Tier)
Best Wyll Features in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Race: Human
- Class: Warlock
- Origin Charcter: Yes
- Background: Folk Hero
- Romance: Yes
- Best Build: Warlock, Rapier Weapon, The Fiend, Primary Damage Eldritch Blast
- Base Proficiencies: Arcana, Persuasion, Intimidation, History
- Location: The Druid Grove, Removing the Parasite Quest, Act 1
- Movement Speed: 9m
- Base Abilities: Dexterity: 16, Intelligence: 8, Charisma: 16, Constitution: 14, Strength: 10, Wisdom: 10
- Initiative: No Information
Wyll gained reputation as the Blade of Frontiers, a human noble and living legend with a dark past. You will need to gain his favor before he shares any information to you, as he gets his strength from his Demonic patron. When he enters the battle to protect Druid Grove early on in the game, you will come across him. Then look for him inside, where he will teach martial arts to children. Wyll loves all forms of kindness toward himself and others and hates cruelty.
The romance with Wyll is simple. Still, the cutscenes sequence and the mystery he conceals make the relationship with him endearing and loving.
Eldritch Blast Cantrip is Wyll’s most potent damaging spell, and the rapier serves as his main weapon in the optimal build. He has good basic stats and, thanks to his Charisma modifier, he passively gets additional hit points. This helps him deliver a lot of combo damage with his major damaging cantrip. However, this leaves him extremely open to attacks and reduces his chances of surviving.
sadly, Wyll is ranked seventh in our rating of Baldur’s Gate 3 Companions. Executing the Warlock Fiend class is challenging, and his skill level deteriorates significantly as the game progresses. We recommend changing his class or subclass or leaving him at the camp during difficult encounters unless you enjoy having him with the party.
Gale (A Tier)
Best Gale Features in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Race: Human
- Class: Wizard
- Background: Sage
- Origin Charcter: Yes
- Base Proficiencies: History, Investigation, Insight, Persuasion, Arcana
- Romance: Yes
- Best Build: Wizard, Staves Weapons, Evocation or Necromancy
- Location: Roadside Cliffs beside Purple Portal Rune on the Rock Wall, Act 1
- Movement Speed: 9m
- Base Abilities: Constitution: 15, Strenght: 9, Dexterity: 14, Charisma: 13, Intelligence: 16, Wisdom: 11
- Initiative: +1
Gale once tried an old forbidden magic of ancient Netheril that is banned and should never be used. Before it’s too late, he fights to restore his goddess’ favor and control corruption. As he investigates magical objects and runs checks on Faerun’s dark and rich past, his vast expertise will come in handy on several missions.
Gale is also one of the romantically inclined companions. Be sympathetic toward all living creatures, especially animals, and strongly seek out and locate the healer in order to earn his confidence. The fact that the player must feed Gale magical objects in order to survive makes his story quest thrilling, but some of you might find it frustrating.
Spellcasting is a key component of the playstyle you should concentrate on when playing Gale. Envocation is Gale’s finest subclass, especially for beginners. We advise him to use staves as his main weapon. From the back lines, he can do respectable damage.
Gale’s class isn’t useful in battle at the start of the game, just as Wyll’s. But as you progress, Gale is able to use powerful spells. He is among the strongest companions at level 5. He was ranked fifth in our Baldur’s Gate 3 Companions Guide & Ranking list. sadly, the action is consumed by the fact that he can only perform one spell every turn. Because of this, when you first start, you rarely ever perform your spells.
Astarion (A+ Tier)
Best Astarion Features in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Race: High Elf
- Class: Rogue
- Background: Charlatan
- Romance: Yes
- Location: Ravaged Beach next to the crashed Nautiloid ship, Act 1, Escape the Nautiloid Quest
- Origin Charcter: Yes
- Best Build: Dual Wield Shortswords, Melee Build, Thief, Rogue
- Base Proficiencies: Deception, Perception, Sleight of Hand, Stealth, Performance, Persuasion, Acrobatics
- Initiative: +3
- Base Abilities: Dexterity: 17, Intelligence: 13, Charisma: 10, Strenght: 8, Constitution: 14, Wisdom: 13
- Darkvision Range: 12m
- Movement Speed: 9m
It’s difficult to understand how dark and complicated Astarion’s previous life was given his distinct personality and charming vampire personality. Only recently, after being freed from his sadistic former owner, has Astarion, a vampire for centuries, been permitted to walk in the sunshine.
How difficult is it to romance a vampire? Well, it depends. Becoming friends with him may be an amazing experience, and he is not at all like the bloodsuckers you are familiar with from previous games. When your party discovers he is a vampire, you can gain his favor by standing by him. Although he generally doesn’t care whether your choices are right or wrong, he will be grateful if you request compensation for saving his life.
He plays the part of a standard rogue thief sidekick and works well with nearly any party companion. With two rapiers or a light crossbow for a ranged build, you may effectively build Astarion as a melee and range damage dealer.
Due to his incredible damage output on the battlefield and his ability to adapt outside of combat, Astarion came in at number four on our list. Astarion’s abilities will be useful if you aren’t playing a comparable build yourself because he is the only companion with stealth and lockpicking skills.
Shadowheart (S- Tier)
Best Shadowheart Features in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Race: High Half-Elf
- Class: Cleric
- Diety: Shar
- Background: Acolyte
- Origin Charcter: Yes
- Location: On the beach next to the Abandoned Ruins, Act 1
- Romance: Yes
- Best Build: Cleric, Spellcasting, Spear, Life Domain, Simple Melee Weapon
- Base Proficiencies: History, Insight, Religion, Medicine
- Initiative: +1
- Base Abilities: Dexterity: 17, Charisma: 10, Strenght: 8, Constitution: 14, Wisdom: 13, Intelligence: 13
- Darkvision Range: 12m
- Movement Speed: 9m
As a survivor on a holy suicide mission, Shadowheart finds protection and direction in her deep dedication to Shar Diety. She lived on the streets until she entered the monastery of the Mistress of the Night and discovered her calling.
When you first meet her aboard the Nautiloid ship, you’ll immediately see how protective she is of a little relic and its specifics. Finding a healer and ignoring all other solutions to the tadpole problem is the only way to win her friendship and eventually love. Shadowhart will approve if she disagrees with the Githyanki warrior since she hates Laezel.
As a Trickster Domain Cleric, Shadowheart’s weapon skills are lacking. But if you pick two powerful heals and use Blessed, Guiding Light, Necro Touch, and command spells, she may be an excellent support partner. To get the greatest build combination, we suggest using a spear or a basic melee weapon.
Because of her class’s adaptability, Shadowheart is ranked third in the Baldur’s Gate 3 Companions Guide & Ranking. With so many boosting cantrips and spells, clerics are likely one of the greatest healing classes, therefore she will be a great party support. If you want to convert her subclass to life domain cleric, you can improve her even more. In any case, she may still become the hard-hitting Trickster Domain damage dealer and survival member of your squad.
Minthara (S Tier)
Best Minthara Features in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Race: Drow
- Class: Paladin
- Background: Noble
- Origin Character: No
- Location: Act 1, Recrutable Shadoe-Cursed Lands Act 2, Shattered Sanctum
- Romance: Yes
- Best Build: Oath of Vegance, Two-Handed Weapon, Spellcasting, Paladin
- Base Proficiencies: Insight, Intimidation, Persuasion, Religion, Athletics, Medicine
- Initiative: +6
- Movement Speed: 9m
- Base Abilities: Constitution: 15, Intelligence: 12, Charisma: 16, Dexterity: 12, Strenght: 15, Wisdom: 19
- Darkvision Range: 24m
In the name of the Absolute, Minthara, a Drow Paladin, is motivated to destroy the Druid Grove. She is one of the three leaders you will meet early on in the Goblin Camp. Gamers have the option to support her and help destroy the settlement and its Druids, or they can support Halsin and resist her. You have to join the goblins or hit her with a non-lethal blow to get her. Minthara will reappear in Act 2 and eventually become a playable companion if she survives the Druid Grove attack.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Oath of Vengeance subclass is a perfect Paladin option, especially for Minthara. Keep in mind that if you respect her and use all of your ability points and statistics once more, you will perform at your best. Access to powerful damaging abilities, efficient debuffs, and survivability will thereafter be made available. Minthara’s character fits in nicely with this subclass’s concentration on damage, which steers clear of routes that are utility- or healing-focused. She becomes an immense threat on the battlefield when armed with a two-handed weapon and medium armor, and her strength is increased by Divine Smite, the Paladin class’s hallmark ability in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Although Minthara paladin builds might be complex, they feature god-tier debuffs, boosts, and single target damage. Early on in the game, you can meet her. She possesses good qualities, excellent dark vision, great initiative, and, because of her racial advantage, Fey Ancestry, is immune to charms. She will challenge even Lae’zel in terms of damage output if you choose to hire her. We placed her in the S tier and in second position in our All Baldur’s Gate 3 Companions Guide & Ranking because of all those factors.
Lae’zel (S+ Tier)
Best Lae’zel Features in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Race: Githyanki
- Class: Fighter
- Background: Soldier
- Location: The Ravaged Beach located in north of the Roadside Cliffs, Act 1
- Romance: Yes
- Best Build: Fighter, Greatsword, Battle Master
- Origin Charcter: Yes
- Base Proficiencies: Intimidation, Survival, Athletics, Acrobatics
- Initiative: +1
- Base Abilities: Constitution: 14, Intelligence: 11, Wisdom: 12, Charisma: 8, Dexterity: 13, Strenght: 17
- Movement Speed: 9m
Lae’zel heals and takes the tadpole off her head because she feels a strong need to return to her kind. Lae’zel is a member of the race of powerful warriors who give their life to fight mind flayers.
This Githyanki Fighter may come out as vicious, but maybe you will like her more the more you get to know her. Domination and power in the battle and beyond are the only ways to get her respect and admiration.
Her strength serves as her main ability. A Battle Master subclass with a Greatsword or Dual Longswords is the ideal build for her. She will rapidly become the best party companion if you obtain her a Haste Helm and a very strong two-handed Everburn Blade early on.
Lae’zel is a strong, resilient warrior who rules the battlefield, earning her the #1 rank in our Baldur’s Gate 3 Companions Guide & Ranking guide. She may do a great number of damage by attacking several times in a turn. She also has semi-optimized HP and excels at CC, which makes her a survival party tank.
She can employ a variety of armor and weaponry because she is a Githyanki warrior. Lae’zel ranked #1 in our companion rating for all of those reasons. Probably the most satisfying playstyle in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to play as a strong Melee DPS and hit many enemies at once with Lae’zel.
Best companions in Baldur’s Gate 3
How you develop them, your job, and your goals will all influence which companions are the best for you. However, as there is only room for you and three others, you will need to pick carefully who you wish to go with. We have ranked them all, on average.
- Shadowhear: A healer is highly beneficial, but Shadowheart also has a lot of spells that can be used in different ways, can switch them up frequently, and has the Guidance cantrip, which provides you an extra 1d4 to almost everything outside of battle. Shadowheart is a cleric, and clerics are powerful.
- Gale: Gale is a glass cannon, to be sure, but he’s worth it since he can cast strong spells that may race across the battlefield. As a live piece of artillery, he will destroy enemies if you place several strong characters in front of him to take the brunt of the blow.
- Karlach: Despite her extreme heat, Karlach is quite cool. She can gather aggro on the front lines by drawing it away from other players and receiving temporary buffs anytime she burns a Soul Coin. Although she lacks wide skills, Karlach will be a good choice if you’re looking for someone who can manage combat and occasionally intimidate someone with a check.
- Astarion: As a jack-of-all-trades like Wyll, Astarion excels as a scout due to his rogue qualities. Astarion may be highly helpful in a dungeon, identifying and disarming traps and opening locks as he goes. This makes him a hazardous but possibly successful choice. The only drawback is that you’ll need to make sure he’s a bit more robust or run the risk of losing him early in battle.
- Halsin: If not for the fact that all of Halsin’s potency is slightly constrained by spell slots and recharges, he certainly merit a higher ranking on this list. However, he is a good fit for any squad because he combines tank and support class skills.
- Wyll: Because Wyll is a versatile player that can contribute to any situation, he’s a smart choice anytime you’re unsure of who to add. However, this makes him a little more difficult to suggest given that you often choose party members to fit a certain role.
- Minthara: We do enjoy a good Paladin, and Minthara is intriguing enough, but she isn’t particularly exceptional at anything; there are better healers, better tanks, and better warriors. Still, despite her grim past, she is also an extremely funny character, and her dry wit and black humour have won over the internet.
- Lae’zel: Now that Karlach is on the squad, Lae’zel is a little harder to have since, while Karlach is also a strong melee tank, he is, quite simply, a little better at it, and you don’t have to put up with Karlach constantly shooting and snapping at you. Even yet, Lae’zel isn’t a horrible fighter because she’s a little more adaptable than a typical warrior because to her Battlemaster tactics and Gith abilities.
- Jahiera: With one exception—she is a Druid, and we already have Halsin—Jaheira should theoretically be higher. As everyone knows, a solid BG3 party is diversified in every way. Halsin is a great addition to the squad if you don’t understand her, but if you do, she might come across as a bit redundant—a character that was merely included to finish the story. It’s a pity, since she’s a delightful person to be around, with a tough yet kind attitude similar to that of a lovable elderly grandma.
- Minsc: Although Minsc is a lot of fun and can summon a space hamster—no, really—he lacks the strength and adaptability of many of the other companions, not to mention their narrative depth, because he is forced to enter the game late into Act 3 and doesn’t really have time to develop. Rangers aren’t a class that we rate very highly.
Baldur’s Gate Companions Recruitment locations
Playable characters with extensive history and relationships to the game’s world and events are known as origin companions. Soon after finishing the Prologue, the origin companions can be enlisted. As an alternative to making a personalized character, any Origin can be chosen as a player character.
Origin companions Recruitment locations
- Gale: Interacting with an Ancient Rune Circle just east of the Nautiloid.
- Astarion: Standing on the trail west of the crashed Nautiloid on the Ravaged Beach.
- Shadowheart: She’ll join you if you free her during the Prologue, and will later be unconscious close to the place your player landed. If not freed from the Nautiloid, she’ll be at the entrance of the Dank Crypt nearby. If not recruited on the Nautiloid or the Dank Crypt, she’ll be found inside the Secluded Grove. If ignored again, you’ll encounter her either at the Goblin Camp or at the Mountain Pass.
- Lae’zel: You’ll first encounter her during the Prologue. Afterwards, she can be found trapped by tieflings, south of the Emerald Grove. If she is not freed, or if she does not join you, Lae’zel can later be found confronting the Githyanki patrol as part of the Find the Githyanki Crèche quest. If you still do not recruit her, she can later be found, dead, in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Her corpse is too damaged to be spoken to, but as a playable character she can be resurrected using Revivify or its scroll version.
- Karlach: North of the Owlbear Nest, south of the Tollhouse. Follow a trail of blood towards the river. If you have recruited Wyll, his companion quest will lead you to her.
- Wyll: Inside the Secluded Grove, training young tieflings. If Karlach joins the party before him he can appear at camp trying to attack Karlach, the player can choose side or calm him down and he joins the party.
Standard companions Recruitment locations
- Jaheira: Found at the Last Light Inn. She will become available as a possible companion during the assault on Moonrise Towers, so long as she is alive and not hostile.
- Halsin: Held prisoner in the Goblin Camp. He will join you if he is freed and you did not attack the Grove. He will become a full companion during Lift the Shadow Curse.
- Minthara: One of the three leaders of the Goblin Camp. She can be recruited at Moonrise Towers so long as she is not killed, and is not made hostile at the Goblin Camp. This includes either attacking the Grove, or ignoring the Grove entirely. Since patch #5 Minthara can also be recruited by knocking her out temporarily. After the other goblin leaders are killed, she will show up at Moonrise Towers ready to be recruited.
- Minsc: Found in the Counting House. He will become available as a companion when found in the Lower City Sewers.
Temporary companions Recruitment locations
- Losiir: Replaces Lae’zel on the Nautiloid if you’re already playing as her as your Origin. Otherwise unencounterable.
Attached Followers Recruitment locations
- Glut: In the Myconid Colony, Glut can be temporarily recruited during the quest Defeat the Duergar Intruders. He will remain in the player’s party for as long as they remain in the Underdark, and as long as his quest isn’t completed.
- Us: aboard the Nautiloid, take the elevator right after leaving the starting room. Will only join you for the Prologue, and potentially as a summonable at the end of Act 2.
- Sazza: Held prisoner in the Druid Grove. If the player helps her, she’ll join the party while escaping.
What are Origin Companions?
Origin companions are playable characters with deep histories and connections to the game’s setting and plot. Once the Prologue is over, the origin companions can be enlisted. Instead of making a new character, you can choose any Origin as a playable character.
- Astarion: High Elf, Rogue
- Gale: Human, Wizard
- Karlach: Zariel Tiefling, Barbarian
- Lae’zel: Githyanki, Fighter
- Shadowheart: High Half-Elf, Cleric of Shar
- Wyll: Human, Warlock
what are Non-Origin Companions?
Later on in the game, non-Origin companions can be acquired at different times, and each one has unique requirements for recruitment.
- Halsin: Wood Elf, Druid, Circle of the Moon
- Jaheira: High Half-Elf, Druid, Circle of the Land
- Minsc: Human, Ranger, Hunter
