Auntie Ethel Bg3 introduction

Making the decision to assist beloved Auntie Ethel is one of the many decisions players must make throughout Baldur’s Gate 3 that will impact their gameplay. Auntie Ethel will be fighting with a couple of guys who are searching for their sister, Mayrina, when the party first sees her.

Players might decide to help them find their sister or deal with them for poor Auntie Ethel during this chat. Here, knocking the males out with non-lethal attacks is the recommended line of action. After this is resolved, Auntie Ethel will invite the party to come to her cottage so she may express her gratitude.

One of the most deadly boss battles in Baldur’s Gate 3 could be with Auntie Ethel. Although she frequently appears in the first act, her spells and assaults have the power to destroy a group of adventurers with a level of twelve. Between her two main phases, she also faces a number of obstacles and minions.

Players will need to be ready and have clear instructions if they wish to defeat her. Players can “win” or finish the mission in Baldur’s Gate 3, although even some of the possible endings come at a significant cost. Some advice might be helpful to anyone hoping to defeat Auntie Ethel successfully.

When Auntie Ethel initially emerges in the Emerald Grove, she seems to be a gentle old lady. Unfortunately, you will discover later that she is not human and that she is enslaving Mayrina, a pregnant woman. Players must exercise additional caution once they are close to Ethel’s house because Baldur’s Gate 3 is a dangerous location with many enemies, traps, and tough decisions. Auntie Ethel is a powerful boss that has the ability to divide herself into several clones that can seriously harm your party members—some could even die from one hit.

Beating Auntie Ethel Bg3 In Baldur’s Gate 3 | How To Prepare For Auntie Ethel?

In theory, players are not required to battle Auntie Ethel. Indeed, they are able to maintain a warm relationship with her. However, you will want to stop the savage monster if you are not among the most evil-aligned players. During the game, she killed a few individuals, and as players learn more about the hag, her list of victims expands.

Players need do a few things to be ready for this fight before going to her cottage. First and foremost, one of the party members has to make sure that they have the Create Water spell or, ideally, water ready to be thrown. In order to prevent them from joining the battle later, it is also important to quickly and quietly eliminate any enemies that may be waiting outside the cottage. Lastly, this is not an exception to the rule that you should rest for a long rest in Baldur’s Gate 3 before engaging in a risky boss battle. The party must be fully stocked before the battle begins.

Players can choose to get along with Auntie Ethel and avoid the fight entirely after they enter the cottage, but this is probably not going to be preferred unless the party has chosen a less decent, darker route, as Auntie Ethel, also known as the Hag, has a long and expanding list of victims.

Auntie Ethel Bg3 Defeat Preparation

All of the verified Baldur’s Gate 3 Companions are listed below:

  • Do not drink from the well yet.
  • Reject Auntie Ethel’s cure.
  • Have both the Fire Bolt and Thunderwave spells or scrolls prepared.
  • Have either one jar of water or the Create Water spell prepared.
  • Have a spell with a long debuff duration, such as Bane, prepared.
  • Have four to six dispensable and inexpensive items in the inventory.
  • Have one low-damage grenade in the inventory.
  • Kill the Redcaps/sheep outside.

In addition to these suggestions, it’s always a good idea to get enough sleep and be healthy. Manage encumbrance in Baldur’s Gate 3 by selling down to a merchant or leaving unnecessary items behind at camp since Auntie Ethel has a lot of valuables to steal. It’s definitely recommended to try this fight at level 10 or above, however a low-level group may “cheese” the encounter.

When the battle is started, the Redcaps outside will join in. There is no redemption path for these creatures that join themselves with evil, but this guide will teach gamers how to save every victim they can. To make the initial phase of the battle considerably simpler, kill them before starting the boss fight.

Players should either take a long rest or reload a new save file from before the well if they have already consumed water from it. Once the encounter starts, the benefit becomes a severe debuff.

Baldur's Gate 3 - How to EASILY not KILL AUNTIE ETHEL and get +1 PERMANENT STAT increase!

The Gnarled Teahouse | Phase One First Stage Of Combat Auntie Ethel bG3 The Hag

Talk to Auntie Ethel when you first arrive at the cottage; she will soon disclose that she is actually a Hag. Contrary to her earlier claims, she does, in fact, know Mayrina, but she will try to convince you that the girl is there voluntarily.

The group may now start the battle or seek the Hag for assistance in healing themselves. She is unwilling to mess with the magic, so even if you accept assistance, nothing will be fixed. Additionally, if players decide to allow Volo to take one of their eyes early in Baldur’s Gate 3, they may not have the opportunity at all because one player would lose an eye if they selected this path.

If at all possible, attempt to debuff the Hag in the beginning of this fight; this will help ease a later stage of the battle. Although not required, it is advised.

Everything will go easily for this first round once the talk is over and the battle starts. The Hag should be the only enemy in the initiative, assuming that every enemy outside the cottage has already been eliminated. She will only let the party knock her down to half health, so there won’t be much to accomplish here. Try to avoid doing anything wild straight away and store harsher attacks for later. She disappears into the illusion of the fireplace if her health is down to half. To proceed, follow her through the doorway.

Soon after finding Mayrina, the battle starts. By blocking their path with various clutter items, players may “cheese” this battle. Auntie Ethel’s offensive capabilities are significantly limited if she is unable to go into melee range. At this point, she saves her finest blows for later and prefers to use melee attacks.

The Hag can be attacked outside of the discourse by anyone who wants to strike first. Telling her you’re going to stop her could feel good, but in a risky situation like this one, it might be more important to deliver a great first blow.

Auntie Ethel will dash past the rear of the fireplace (which was an illusion) when she is just half well. Go with her.

How to Get Past The Gnarled Door?

Now, players will find themselves in a room full of Auntie Ethel’s victims, trapped in a torture room for all time. The passage is blocked by the Gnarled Door, however players may talk with the door to discover that it is also one of Auntie Ethel’s victims. It’s an illusion, too, the door.

Auntie Ethel will burn this victim alive and murder him for failing to perform his duties if players enter the room directly. Use a Whispering Mask, equip it for a brief moment, pass through the door, and then quickly un-equip the mask to save the Gnarled Door.

The Overgrown Tunnel | Phase Two The Hag’s Masked Victims | Dealing With The Masked Minions

Technically speaking, the second phase of the fight in Baldur’s Gate 3 involves some of the Hag’s victims, who are now forced to assault the party while wearing masks. Go through the first area and talk to the Gnarled Door, which is the big tree root face, to go to the room.

This is yet another victim of the Hag who is posing as someone else in order to get past them. Just go through him as you would any other door. But be aware that if you do this, the Hag will probably set him on fire. He can only be saved by rapidly equipping a Whispering Mask, going through, and then instantly un-equipping.

A few of the Hag’s other victims will greet the group once they enter this area. They are all wearing masks and making a valiant effort to resist being controlled. This implies that they won’t always launch an attack when it’s their turn to take the initiative.

Now and then they will overwhelm the Hag and decide not to fight. The group can employ non-lethal attacks or kill them to pass past them and into the next area. They cannot be saved since taking off the mask would kill them, even if it is stolen from their body while they are unconscious.

It is not always recommended for players to slip by them and move on to the next room. First of all, getting the entire party past each enemy can be tough, and even if they are successful, they can get dragged into the initiative when they face the Hag in the next room, which would make the fight much more difficult. Therefore, eliminate them right away, whether it’s deadly or not.

This room has enemies, each of whom is wearing a mask. These are also Auntie Ethel’s victims. Now, players have an option. If these victims are still alive, the boss fight’s second stage is considerably more difficult since they will show up and attack the party.

The second stage is made easy by killing them immediately. Sadly, this does imply that these unfortunate people will die. Parties with good alignment can enter this room covertly. A waterfall on the right leads to the exit. Use the Stealth option after waiting for the lone masked opponent to patrol with their back to you. Switch party members and lead each person past the waterfall separately, guiding them simply to the other side at the finish, if this doesn’t work. Then, turn off Group mode.

Passing The Noxious Fumes

Use the Fire Bolt cantrip to turn off the Noxious Fumes. The player will still sustain damage from this new fiery area, but take advantage of the opportunity to find a ruptured stone. If you place a pointless object on top of this, the vent will shut off, keeping the fire and the Noxious Fumes from escaping.

It takes a perception check to see the peculiar flowers in this location. Upon touch, they explode. It’s best to keep group mode off and lead each character through separately to prevent running over them.

The Ancient Abode | Phase 3 The Hag Final Stage Of Combat

Proceed through the waterfall on the far side to reach the next location after taking down the masked victims. The group will come to a path here that is obstructed by noxious gas. Although it may be solved without it, there is a perception check here that will provide players some useful hints. Players will need to cover the vent in order to stop the gas from escaping. To do this, fire the gas and provide a brief period of clarity with the Fire Bolt cantrip. Find the Ruptured Stone and toss anything onto it while doing this. It may be a pointless object that people won’t miss.

As long as the party is healthy, it is feasible to push through the gases. To get to the conclusion, just jump as far as you can and go swiftly through the gasses. Damage will be incurred, but if the party acts fast, it should be minimal.

The gasses will thereafter be stopped. But be careful—there are some explosive flowers laying around, and the perception check stated above reveals where they are. At one point, Mayrina is seen hanging in a cage in the center of the chamber with the Hag. The party can choose to enter stealth mode and go stealthily around the far right corner of the chamber if she hasn’t noticed you yet.

After saving your work in Baldur’s Gate 3, proceed to the door in the rear right corner that leads to the room. The group will discover a number of things here, but they will also figure out a way out. A quick travel waypoint will be shown nearby if you choose this exit. The advantage of using this approach is that the party may now take a long rest if necessary, and then return by the same entrance. This way, they can return through the room and be fully recovered for the beginning of the battle with the Hag.

No matter how you approach the battle, make a save before you engage her since it’s not an easy one and things may soon turn bad. In Baldur’s Gate 3, save scumming is a fantastic method to make sure you avoid any unfavorable outcomes.

This is completely optional, though; if you don’t need to take a long rest, just go up to the Hag, and a cutscene will start the battle. In the end, it will be shown that Mayrina was there voluntarily and planned to trade her unborn baby for the Hag’s life in return for reviving her husband. But she still has to be saved, and the only way to achieve so is to win in this battle in Baldur’s Gate 3. The Hag will try to burn Mayrina alive right away, therefore the initial portion of this battle will include tossing an object or dousing her in water using the Create Water spell.

The Hag will have a tendency to divide herself into clones during the battle. The debuff from previously is useful in this situation. Fortunately, only the genuine Hag will have the debuff because the clones do not assume all statuses. The party can concentrate on the genuine Hag or swiftly defeat the clones with little effort, which can save time and energy. She will clone herself to resemble Mayrina after her health has somewhat improved. Since you don’t want to mistakenly murder the actual Mayrina, here is where things become complicated.

Since she should still have the Wet status effect from before, there is a technique to figuring out who the true Mayrina is.

Simply use low-damaging attacks to save her from dying if she is no longer affected by this status effect. To survive this battle, be prepared to do her some serious damage and keep a lot of healing supplies on hand because the Hag will also use the Hold Person spell a lot. She has some fairly great things on her, so once you fight her, go ahead and loot her. Don’t forget to loot her rear room as well.

Players can assist Mayrina in bringing her spouse back as a Baldur’s Gate 3 zombie in a few more dialogues, although it is entirely optional.

If the player leaves the hidden victims alive at the start of the battle, Auntie Ethel will burn Mayrina’s cell to the ground and call upon them to attack on her behalf. Put out this fire. Use Thunderwave to “cheese” this battle by throwing Auntie Ethel down the cliff she’s standing on and killing her. She does have some valuables and coins on her person, which is the sole drawback. However, it does guarantee the victims’ survival.

  • When Auntie Ethel lights the cage on fire, use the water jar or the Create Water spell to put it out.
  • When Auntie Ethel transforms herself into Mayrina, strike them both with a low-damage grenade to expose the hag.
  • To identify the true boss when Auntie Ethel divides into her own illusions, look for the one with the debuff on it.

Players will probably not be able to endure a long battle if they fight her the old-fashioned way, so use the healers to attempt to keep everyone alive while concentrating on the real Auntie Ethel with the damage dealers. She will cast Hold Person, effectively rendering everyone captured dead for the rest of the battle. Reloading a save from earlier in the battle can be an option if players are unable to withstand this spell.
