Best Bg3 Wizard Build introduction

One of the greatest Wizard subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the Evocation school as it lets you employ powerful area damage abilities without harming allies. The more strong you are and the more spells you can cast, the greater influence this has. A group of enemies can be severely damaged by the broad area-of-effect spell Fireball. It is quite helpful in this regard. Battle tactics can be greatly simplified by being able to cast this without endangering your allies.

The Wizard class is well known for their exceptional adaptability and skill in casting spells. With the broadest spell repertoire in the game at their use, they can adjust to a variety of scenarios. Wizards are excellent at utility, control, and area-of-effect spells, but they sometimes need to be carefully planned and prepared. This build is a fantastic choice for massive area damage, but it won’t reach its full potential until level 5.

  • Freecast: You’ve found a wonderful adaptation inside yourself. For your next action or spell, all spell slots, charges, and comparable resource costs are eliminated. recovers from a Short or Long rest. The ability to cast nearly three spells in a single turn makes this feature absolutely god-tier when combined with metamagic to create an extremely powerful build. Combine the Freecast with Bonus Action (3x) and Quickened spell (2x).
  • Shield of Thralls: Cast a volatile shield around yourself or an ally to deal 10 temporary hit points to the target. Best Bg3 Wizard Build Level Progression

Level 1

level 1 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 1 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

You should create your character at level 1 by following our Evocation Wizard Build instructions. Choose the right background, race, skills, and ability score, paying particular attention to dexterity and intelligence. As you won’t be able to select your subclass until level 3, performance will likely start slowly. The Wizard’s spellbook will have six spells, four prepared spells, and three cantrips at level 1. When utilizing the Best Baldur’s Gate 3 Evocation Wizard Build.

  • Cantrip Features
    • Acid Splash: Launch an acid bubble at any creature it comes into contact with. This spell can decrease armor and deals fair area damage.
    • Ray of Frost: Send forth a cold blue-white light beam that will cause the target’s movement speed to drop by three meters. This is a good attack to stop a melee aggressor from getting closer to you.
    • Fire Bolt: Hurls fireball dealing 1d10 fire damage 18m range. The strongest cantrip available to wizards, with the added ability to ignite or set objects on fire (Excellent with the Grease spell).

  • Subclass Feature
    • Arcane Recovery: That’s two spell slots back to you. You may recover one level 2 spell or two level 1 spells with this amount. You may use this simple mechanic to stop yourself from resting constantly in between battles. When your spell slots are limited at lower levels, be prepared to rest a lot.

  • Spell Features
    • Magic Missile: Three magical force darts will appear; each will deal 1d4+1 Force to its target. The darts consistently hit their mark. This ability’s 100% landing chance makes it strong. Much less potent, yet helpful when you can eliminate an opponent or target up to three different enemies when you need a sure hit.
    • Thunderwave: Send forth a tumultuous wave of force that drives away all creatures and objects (2d8 Thunder). With this spell, you can create distance and escape while also acting as a knockback to melee characters. Additionally, it works well to knock enemies from ledges or high positions and maintains some degree of defense in the early level.
    • Mage Armour: Surround an unarmoured creature with a protective magical force. Its Armour Class increases to 13 + its Dexterity modifier. This is an essential defensive skill because it sets AC to 13 + Dexterity Modifier landing you at 16 AC total when it’s active. Mage Armour stays on your character until you take a long rest, or down and can be cast out of combat. Usually, I cast this and use a Spell Recharge to be at full spells.
    • Grease: Cover the ground in grease, slowing creatures within and possibly making them fall Prone. Having some type of crowd control early can help your group.
    • Sleep: Put creatures into a magical slumber. Select targets up to a combined 24 hit points. Powerful area crowd control that’s very strong at lower levels.
    • Chromatic Orb: Hurl a sphere that deals 3-24 elemental damage and possibly creates a surface on impact. A great spell because you can choose the element, and cold can do good damage and proc prone or crowd control a target.
  • Wizard Level 1 Spells: Thunderwave, Mage Armour, Sleep, Magic Missile

Best Bg3 Wizard Build Priorities | Bg3 Wizard Build Gameplay

The use of Mage Armour right after a long rest is crucial while playing an Evocation Wizard. This will increase your AC to 18 AC after a shield of 16. However, to equip a shield you require a race like Half-Elf or Human! You should then focus on crowd control. Sleep, Grease, and Fire Bolt together can be used to accomplish this. Additionally, you may utilize Thunderwave as a knockout, and Chromatic Orb for stuns. Chromatic Orb may be cast using Ice which can knock enemies prone, basically skipping their turn. At level 5, wizards gain a great deal of power, but before that, expect a sluggish start.

Best Bg3 Wizard Build Priorities is the following:

  1. Quarterstaff with a free spell like Melf’s or Crones
  2. Find and equip a shield if human or Half-Elf
  3. Supplies for camps, scrolls, alchemy material
  4. Exchange experiment or spells to find the right combination for you.
  5. Consume scrolls that have useful spells

Level 2

level 2 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 2 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

Enroll in the level two Evocation Subclass. Strong damage and elemental spells are the main topics of evocation school. This school grants you access to two features.

  • Subclass Features
    • Evocation Savant: The cost of learning Evocation spells from scrolls is halved, with each spell level costing 25 gold pieces. When learning new spells, this reduces the cost of acquiring a scroll.
    • Sculpt Spells: Make safe pockets inside your Evocation Spell. Whenever an ally makes a saving throw, they automatically win and incur no damage. Spells that are area-based won’t produce “friendly fire.” Fireball may be cast without harming allies.

  • Spells Feature
    • Feather Fall: Reduce the rate at which allied creatures descend. They gain immunity to damage from falling. This is an excellent spell for all-around exploration. More specifically, it prevents fall damage from killing your character when they enter the Underdark.
    • Find Familiar: Obtain the assistance of a trustworthy, fey spirit that will take any animal of your choosing. Call for a friendly creature companion to go with you. When traveling overland, you may also utilize them to get into more confined overland.

When your spell slots are full at this level, use Fire Bolt to do damage. When under siege, save Thunderwave for a knockback. For 100% damage, you can employ Magic Missile for kill shots. Always activate your Mage Armour after a long rest. For crowd control or to apply grease when there is a lot of melee in a choke spot, use Chromatic Orb with cold.

Wizard Level 2 Spells: Chromatic Orb, Mage Armour, Thunderwave, Grease, Magic Missile

Level 3

level 3 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 3 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

You’ll get more spell slots when you reach level three. Two more level 2 and one more level 1 spell slots are yours. You can now use a few spells, one at a higher level and one at a lower level, in each battle.

  • Scorching Ray: Hurl 3 rays of Fire, each doing 2d6 Fire damage at 18m range. Consider this spell as an enhanced Magic Missile, capable of dealing massive damage when necessary but yet being able to miss. Casting on one target or up to three is possible, which is excellent for multi-kills without the need to use a skill.
  • Misty Step: You may see up to eighteen meters when you teleport to an empty area surrounded by silver mist. Early in the game, this is one of the BEST defensive spells. When you most need it, it’s a teleport. And all it takes for this spell to work is one bonus action. If you have the spell slots, you can spend your action for a powerful spell and a bonus action to flee.

Not Misty Step, but merely Scorching Ray is slotted at this level. The major reason, there’s a valuable amulet that offers us this spell for free. If you often find yourself dying, replace Grease with Misty Step and keep going until you obtain the Amulet. Also, you can learn the potent defensive spell Mirror Image. For single target or multiple single target shots, use Scorching Ray.

  • Wizard Level 3 Spells: Scorching Ray, Mage Armour, Magic Missile, Chromatic Orb, Thunderwave, Grease

Level 4

level 4 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 4 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

You get access to two extra spells, another cantrip, and another level 2 spell slot at level four. Additionally, you get to select an feat or ability improvement. We advise using the Ability Improvement to raise your Intelligence by two and make your spells more potent.

  • Cantrip Features
    • Blade Ward: Attacks that pierce, slash, and Bludge only deal half of their damage. This is a good cantrip to use in anticipation of melee damage.

  • Feat Features
    • Ability Improvement: +2 for intelligence. To get to level 10, we shall use Spell Sniper at level 8 and another +2 at level 12.

  • Spell Features
    • Mirror Image: Create 3 false replicas of yourself that confuse enemies. Your Armour Class is raised by three for each duplicate. Each time you successfully block an attack, one of the duplicates vanishes. This is a god-tier defense spell to use if you keep getting killed by melee or ranged attacks. Although you don’t want to have an overly defensive build, the combination of Mage Armour and Mirror Image can help you survive challenging fights.
    • Flaming Sphere: This produces a fireball that may harm you and serve as a companion. It’s a very effective decoy that also has a simple damaging skill. It may also be performed before a combat, and if you don’t use another concentration spell, it helps absorb and deal this degree of damage.

  • Wizard Level 4 Spells: Mage Armour, Magic Missile, Chromatic Orb, Flaming Sphere, Thunderwave, Scorching Ray, Grease

Level 5

level 5 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 5 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

With access to Level 3 spells at level 5, your wizard begins to feel quite strong. Here’s why you should use Fireball and Haste at this level:

  • Haste: To become Hastened and enable an extra action for that character, target yourself or an ally. Concentration is needed for this spell, and after ten turns, the victim gets listless. This costs a level 3 spell and provides whoever is targeted with a significant tactical advantage. Although I don’t usually use my Wizard as a supporting character, granting this ability to a Fighter with Great Weapon Master and Extra Attack effectively allows them to launch five attacks in a single turn.
  • Fireball: With your fingertips, shoot a brilliant flame that explodes upon contact, setting everything nearby on fire (8d6 18m range, 6m radius). As a Wizard, you begin to feel extremely powerful as you cast this “mega” spell, which is what everyone desires. It covers a large radius and deals a ton of damage. Make sure everything is clear or choose a spot on the ground that won’t affect your allies.

Your main priorities at this level should be Fireball for damage, Haste for utility, and Scorching Ray for single targets. Use Flaming Sphere as a diversion and switch in Misty Step or Mirror Image if you struggle with survival.

  • Wizard Level 5 Spells: Mage Armour, Magic Missile, Grease, Chromatic Orb, Flaming Sphere, Haste, Thunderwave, Scorching Ray, Fireball

Level 6

level 6 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 6 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

We gain access to a new spell and the subclass feature Potent Cantrip at level six. Here’s what you ought to do at this point.

  • Subclass Feature
    • Potent Cantrip: Your cantrips become more difficult to completely avoid. A creature still absorbs half of the damage even if they are successful in saving throw. We won’t use Firebolt too frequently, but this does make it a little more secure.

  • Spell Feature
    • Glyph of Warding: This glyph does elemental damage and has a 3 meter radius. One good feature is that you may select the kind of element and place it as a trap on the ground. Although it doesn’t do as much damage as other area spells, it might still be useful due of the various elements status effects.
    • Counterspell: React by nullifying the spell of another creature. The spell has to be at least third level. If it is higher, you will have to make a Check, the difficulty of which is determined by the Level of the spell, in order to negate it. A great spell since it requires no action because it is a reaction. Although you don’t want to use up all of your spell slots, you can take down another spell caster.

When you get to Level 6, you ought should be about ready to leave Act 1. Don’t forget to check vendors and merchants on supplies for camp and alchemy. Check out the top Act 1 items as well. Act 1 also offers permanent bonuses that you will find hard to leave. In the end least, Grymforge possesses strong weapons and armor (Adamantine) that can help you well into Act 3. Act 2 is where you’ll be stuck, so think about spending some time to make some items before moving on.

  • Wizard Level 6 Spells: Mage Armour, Magic Missile, Scorching Ray, Misty Step, Mirror Image, Flaming Sphere, Haste, Slow, Fireball, Glyph of Warding

Level 7

level 7 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 7 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

At level 7 you gain access to level 4 spells and 1 more prepared spell.

  • Spell Feature
    • Banishment: momentarily It takes concentration to banish your target to an other dimension of existence. This is an extremely potent crowd control effect with a single target. We will use this skill sparingly against bosses or anything that delivers a lot of damage because it does need concentration. The target won’t endanger you, but you won’t be able to inflict damage on them. With this, you can eliminate more enemies in two turns.
    • Ice Storm: delivers 4d6 cold damage and 2d8 bludgeoning damage across a vast 6 meter area. This spell is a massive fireball with a radius that does two different kinds of damage and uses cold to trigger status effects. Use it in the fourth-level spell to do area damage.
  • Wizard Level 7 Spells: Mage Armour, Thunderwave, Chromatic Orb, Flaming Sphere, Fireball, Haste, Counterspell, Ice Storm, Magic Missile, Grease, Scorching Ray

Level 8

level 8 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 8 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

The Wizard has access to two more spells and a feat at level 8. Consider using Spell Sniper Feat, Blight, and Greater Invisibility.

  • Spells Feature
  • Blight: Has an 8d8 necrotic damage range. If someone is vulnerable to it, this will aid with damage to a single target and a distinct elemental type. Moreover, they still receive half damage on save, thus continuous damage can spike a single target.
  • Greater Invisibility: Turn a creature Invisible. Attack against it have Disadvantage. It attacks with Advantage. This is a helpful skill to give allies invisibility. You can use this in and outside of combat for utility.

  • Feat Feature
  • Spell Sniper: reduces critical chance dice roll by and you can select one cantrip. This is helpful because Eldritch Blast is the most powerful cantrip and we get a buff to Cantrip at level 6 with Potent Cantrip. Also, you are more likely to strike which is always helpful critically.

  • Cantrip Feature
  • Eldritch Blast: force harm As you go through the levels, the spell produces several beams: two beams at level five and three beams at level ten. Every beam is rolled independently. Used to deal force damage or when you run out of spell slots. In addition to being valuable in fighting, this may also be used to open holes inside walls.

Your wizard will be quite useful at level eight, and with an improved cantrip, you won’t have to worry about running out of spell slots. Although your main objective should still be area damage, the addition of Blight and Eldritch Blast allows us to concentrate more on a single target.

  • Wizard Level 8 Spells: Mage Armour, Magic Missile, Thunderwave, Grease, Fireball, Counterspell, Ice Storm, Banishment, Chromatic Orb, Haste, Flaming Sphere, Scorching Ray

Level 9

level 9 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 9 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

Level 9 grants the Best Baldur’s Gate 3 Evocation Wizard Build access to level 5 spells, one additional prepared spell, and the ability to select two more spells to study.

  • Conjure Elemental: Twist the barrier between the Planes until an elemental ally emerges to pursue and defend you. Because it can shock opponents, the Earth Elemental is my favorite. Whatever you call forth will not need your concentration; it will follow you around and defend you. These items are quite capable of withstanding pressure and harm, and I strongly advise utilizing it.
  • Cloudkill: Create a large cloud that deals around 5–40 Poison damage per turn. produces poison and severe area damage. If you are up against something that is resistant to other harms, you should switch this into your slots that are ready.

  • Wizard Level 9 Spells: Mage Armour, Magic Missile, Thunderwave, Grease, Chromatic Orb, Scorching Ray, Haste, Ice Storm, Banishment, Conjure Elemental, Fireball, Counterspell, Flaming Sphere

Level 10

level 10 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 10 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

At level 10, the Wizard can learn two spells, gets a new sublcass feature, and another prepared spell.

  • Subclass Feature
    • Empowered Evocation: Your grip of evocation magic has become more firm, and any evocation spell you cast will allow you to add your intelligence modifier to the damage roll.

  • Spells Feature
    • Cone of Cold: 8d8 cold damage Make a flurry of frost, crisp air, and condensed snow crystals erupt from your hands. Another amazing conal damage spell that is cold so it can proc status effects.
    • Telekinesis: With a single thought, toss an creature or object up to 18 meters. You can reapply Telekinesis once every turn without using up a spell slot. More damage is dealt by heavier items. With this sneakily potent magic, you may instantly eliminate enemies by throwing them from high ledges or into death environments.

  • Cantrip Feature
    • True Strike: Get an advantage when you roll your next attack. This is a mediocre cantrip, but advantage can be useful if you need to do a lot of damage.

  • Wizard Level 10 Spells: Mage Armour, Magic Missile, Grease, Chromatic Orb, Scorching Ray, Fireball, Haste, Counterspell, Banishment, Cloudkill, Thunderwave, Flaming Sphere, Conjure Elemental, Ice Storm

Level 11

level 11 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 11 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

At level 11 the Wizard accesses the final level of spells, level 6. Our recommendation is Disintegration and Globe of Invulnerability.

  • Spell Feature
    • Globe of Invulnerability: forms a barrier that confines objects and creatures within of it 3m is immune to all damage and demands concentration. In essence, you cannot pass away while inside this barrier. When under a lot of strain and you need to dig in, it might be beneficial for you and/or your team.
    • Disintegrate: Shoot a thin green ray from your finger. If the 50-100 Force damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, it disintegrates into crumbly ash. My favorite spell in the entirety of Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s a powerful single-target damage spell that can outright disintegrate targets. While this build is focused on AOE, it’s a must-have in any aresnal for single target pressure.

  • Wizard Level 11 Spells: Mage Armour, Magic Missile, Thunderwave, Chromatic Orb, Scorching Ray, Flaming Sphere, Fireball, Counterspell, Ice Storm, Cloudkill, Disintegrate, Conjure Elemental, Grease, Haste, Banishment

Level 12

level 12 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com
level 12 Best Ranger Build Bg3 | Tellagraph.com

We’ve reached max level of 12 in Baldur’s Gate 3 with our Wizard. At this level you can learn two more spells, prepare one additional and select a feat.

  • Spell Features
  • Create Undead: Bring a corpse to life as a heinous mummy that defends you. The corpse must be little or medium in size. The highest level undead corpse we are able to summon, with an abundance of health and potent damage.
  • Chain Lighting: causes 10-80 lighting damage. Hit an enemy with lightning. Up to three additional enemies within an 18-meter radius will be electrified by three more bolts that explode from the target. Another incredible damage skill with some potential for area or multitargeting. The spell Disintegrate is limited by its lowest possible strike count of 10, which allows for a greater possibility for many kills but also a wider range of possible results.

  • Feat Features
  • Ability Improvement: +2 to Intelligence at this stage, you should feel like an utter god. Unlike other classes, you can swap in spells and out. As a Wizard you can also learn more spells than what we have listed.
  • Survival: Mage Armour, Misty Step, Globe of Invulnerability, Invisibility Spell or Potion, Mirror Image

Best Bg3 Wizard Build Gameplay Tips and Tricks

Here’s the Best Bg3 Wizard Build Gameplay Tips and Tricks:

  1. Bonus Action: Don’t forget your bonus action – you can use a potion of healing or speed to increase your survivability.
  2. Pre-Buff: Always cast Mage Armour following a long rest. This will keep you alive and oftentimes you will forget it falls off.
  3. Environment: Remember you can create environmental damage. Combine Grease with a fire spell and coat the area with fire damage.
  4. Area Damage: Your priority should be creating big area damage. Think of ways to hit multiple targets directly or with environmental damage to inflict the most damage at once.
  5. Knockback: Having a spell-like Thunderwave is essential to handling pressure from enemies.
  6. Rest Constantly: Your spell slots will quickly run out in challenging fights. Resting and using resources is a small-time commitment, but it’s the difference between life and death when you enter combat.
  7. Positioning: Keeping your distance and casting spells is how you successfully do damage. When needed, look to move back or even use Hide to prevent incoming damage.
  8. Use Consumables: One of the best early consumables is the Potion of Speed. This gives you an extra action and essentially doubles your combat potential for a few turns.
  9. Crowd Control: Wizards have great crowd control options. Focus on taking out the primary target with Sleep, Hold Person, or any other CC to limit potential damage.
  10. Big Nuke: Typically, you want to cast your big spells early to finish off targets before they can attack. But save at least one of your spell slots for a critical moment. Usually, I do this for Misty Step as it’s a ‘get-out’ card.
